The Big Picture
The
Green River lies in a wide
river canyon. Its banks are
lined with giant old
cottonwood trees
intermingled with juniper
and pinion. The green of the
trees stands in stark
contrast to the rock cliffs, making this one of the most beautiful and little appreciated -- canyons in Utah. Youll encounter rapids
four of the five days over 50 in all! This is more rapids than on any other Tag-A-Long
rafting vacations! These are good natured rapids, easy to learn on and play in. The
whitewater is rolling and playful in disposition yet give eager students the opportunity to learn to read and negotiate the river. You can choose your own vessel, too: inflatable kayak, family paddle raft or the "mother" raft.
There
are some stipulations for
boat assignments that will
require a closer look with
your reservation. One
inflatable per three
to five participants is provided for
the entire trip to share.
Should you prefer to have an
inflatable exclusively on
these rafting vacations, you
are required to rent. The
first raft must carry
supplies and will have to be
filled before a paddle boat
can be considered and there
must be enough interest to
paddle it.
The Details
Day 1 Lunch & Dinner
You depart from Tag-A-Longs Moab
Utah office at 8:30 a.m. Were headed for the airport, where we will board charter planes that will take you to
begin your Green River
rafting trip. Guides for this five-day
Utah river rafting adventure
await you. After flying over the high desert country, we land at the Sand Wash field to take a short walk to the
Green River. The expedition begins with a discussion and instructions on handling your
whitewater boat. This first day youll have an opportunity to get
into the river as we float through a nice calm stretch. Youll get lots of paddling practice
to prepare for the
whitewater tomorrow. Tonight we will set up camp as guides teach you and your family how to pitch tents, and learn about other camp systems. Dinner is our treat, a surprisingly delicious outdoor meal prepared by your guides. In the meantime, you can play Frisbee, horseshoes, or just relax by the riverside.
Day 2 Breakfast, lunch & dinner
After a hearty breakfast, well hit the river and splash right into the first
whitewater of the day. This
rafting vacation starts out small so you can slowly build your confidence
in the whitewater. If you decide you dont want to paddle, you can always ride the support raft with the guides. The day will be spent exploring the deep canyon of the Green River which at one point is even deeper than the Grand Canyon at its deepest point! Another night of camping will have you accustomed to outdoor camp life just like the pioneers!
Day 3 Breakfast, lunch & dinner
Today is a diverse day along the river. Theres lots more
river rafting containing beautiful, lazy sections of calm water
and smaller whitewater
rafting. Theres also lots of stories to be told today as we visit old cowboy camps. Your guides will share tales of outlaw hideouts and cattle rustlers with you. Youve heard of Butch Cassidy and his Wild Bunch? Well keep an out for signs that they were here! This is their old stomping ground and there may still be a few ghosts around! Try to pick out the spots where they hid from the lawmen who were hot on their trail! Tonight, youll hear more stories as you enjoy dinner by the side of the river maybe in the same spot those outlaws ate dinner years ago. After sundown, find the Milky Way and let your imagination soar.
Day 4 Breakfast, lunch & dinner
This is the day that will get your adrenaline flowing as we encounter both large and small rapids. Youll rock and roll in the waves as you maneuver your raft downstream. Remember, if you dont want to paddle your own boat, you can always climb aboard the "mother raft."
We have two rafting
vacations that float us
past Native American
land. On the San Juan,
land is allocated to teh
Navajo. Green River
rafting trips takes us by the Ute Indian Reservation on
the north east of the river and pure Old West cattle country on the other side. Tonight youll be mighty proud of yourself as you recall the days accomplishments, make camp and enjoy your evening meal. Youve earned every delicious bite today! Maybe you should try sleeping out under the stars tonight since its your last night of camping.
Day 5 Breakfast & lunch
This morning youll spend your last half day saying goodbye to
Utah river rafting. Youll enjoy a few more rapids, some more calm water and playful riffles. After lunch we arrive where vehicles will be waiting to drive us back to Moab. You should arrive about 5:00 p.m. at the Tag-A-Long office
to be delivered to a
hotel for this single
night. Dinner and
breakfast on your own.
Day
6 Lunch & Dinner
Your
4x4 tour begins in Moab at Tag-A-Longs office at 7:00 a.m.
with your friendly, competent guide,
board a 4wd vehicle and travel across the high desert to Green River, Utah, to the Horseshoe Canyon trailhead. Today is one of the highlights of the trek: a hike deep into the canyon to see The Great Gallery, the mysterious, world renown rock art panel left by ancient American Indian cultures in the Southwest
near Moab. The guide will explain the difference between petroglyphs and pictographs and will discuss various rock art styles including the ghostly Barrier Canyon style, displayed at the Great Gallery.
There is time to sit quietly with the powerful images that tower above you. The hike to the panel descends about 600 feet.
Bring a day pack for lunch
and water. Upon return to
the rim, we will drive over
trails to our first camp
nestled in the pinion and
juniper trees. The campsite
overlooks the true cowboy
country in the Maze.
Twisting, colorful canyons
stretch for miles into the
horizon. As evening
approaches, your guide turns
into a chef as he or she
prepares a delicious dinner
following the traditional
cowboy style using a set of
cast iron Dutch ovens. When
night falls, the number of stars in the sky
is awesome, tempting one to sleep outside of
the tent instead of in it!
Day
7 Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
After breakfast well hit
Utah 4 wheel drive roads of
Canyonlands for the Doll House. The route takes us over the perilous Flint Trail switchbacks to the Golden Staircase. While your guide drives around it, we recommend you take the delightful, three mile hike over the Golden Staircase Trail. You
are meet at the bottom. Only a limited number of people can visit this pristine area overnight. Plan to spend this day in the solitude of an uninhabited land while walking with others who value it as much as you do. At the Doll House, enjoy wonderful privacy in our enchanting campsite where you can wander away to nearby overlooks. We settle here for two nights.
Evenings we can share
stories of the Outlaws. More great food
fills us happy and satisfied before you fall asleep among the silent rocks.
Day
8 Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Eat that hearty breakfast this morning because were off to explore the trails near the Doll House. From Standing Rock to the Harvest Scene, well wind our way through a maze of canyons. The Harvest Scene viewed only by the privileged few - represents another famous Barrier Canyon style rock art panel showing human figures harvesting crops. As we continue through the canyons,
be prepared to be mesmerized by the geologic formations. Stone columns, balanced rocks and the Chocolate Drops will have you using all the film in your camera, so bring plenty. This is a full day of hiking, and while it is long (8 Miles), it is not a strenuous or difficult hike. There are heights 800 ft. Your day pack will come in handy again, but at dinner time, kick back and let your guides do the cooking while you rest around the campfire. Later, listen for the yowl of coyotes!
Day
9 Breakfast & Lunch
After
a last breakfast in the wilderness, you take one more hike on the Old Spanish Trail to Spanish Bottom to meet your ride back to Moab.
Your 4-wheeling ends today. By the time we hit the banks of the Colorado River, youll be ready to eat lunch while you await the arrival of
a Tag-A-Long jet boat, the Colorado Explorer. While you settle into comfortable seats, your boat driver brings you up the 53-mile canyon of the Colorado River to Moab. On both sides of the river, colorful red rock canyon walls tower as much as 2,000 feet above. The interplay of canyon colors, the deep blue of the sky above, and the speedy ride on the Colorado
River provide a wonderful impression never
to be forgotten. Arrive in Moab by 6:00 p.m.
