The Big Picture

For music and nature lovers who have attended the Festival’s Colorado River Benefit Concerts in the grotto and wondered what it would be like to continue down the river, this Colorado River raft trip with music is the opportunity. Our 4-day 3-night custom expedition combines rafting on the serene, flat-water sections of the Colorado River with outstanding chamber music concerts in extraordinary settings each day. For those who really want to turn up the excitement, a 1-day rapids extension can be added to the trip which will take patrons through the exhilarating Class III and IV rapids of world-famous Cataract Canyon. One patron has called the June Raft adventure a ”a feast for all senses”.

Dates for the 2008 flat-water expedition are from June 15-18. The rapids add-on would extend the trip by one day, returning participating patrons to Moab via scenic flight, on June 19. The itinerary includes rafting, swimming, hiking, and, of course, just relaxing. And, every day, there is a wonderful concert. A varied classical chamber repertoire shares the stage with the exuberance of traditional folk and roots music. Participation in this benefit event is limited to 18. In 2007, the cost was $2,500 for the flat water trip including a $1,250 tax-deductible contribution to the Moab Music Festival, helping to fund our education and community outreach programs. The 2007 rapids supplement was $500. Pricing for the 2008 trip has yet to be determined. We anticipate the 2008 trip will be operated by Festival Supporter - Tag-a-Long Expeditions. Previous outdoor experience is not necessary. This trip is suitable for most people over the age of 16, in general good health, with a minimum level of strength and agility. Each guest is required to complete a standard risk waiver prior to departure on the trip. Please call the Festival office with any questions: 435-259-7003. Tag-A-Long will refer you to The Moab Music Festival office, for the actual reservation.

Moab Music Festival River Trip Itinerary

June 16 - Moab

Travel day to Moab. Join fellow rafters and musicians for a light supper and short musical program. You will meet the staff of Tag-a-Long Expeditions who will review the trip, distribute waterproof bags for your gear and answer any questions you may have.

June 17 - Grotto Concert

Meet at Tag-A-Long Expeditions at 8:30 a.m. or, if you like, a shuttle will pick you up at your motel. At the river, the guides will review the amenities of the fully-provisioned J-Rigs and fit you with a flotation vest. As we drift languidly, our naturalist will discuss the striking geological features and cultural history of this unique area. After a stop for lunch, we will continue down-river to the grotto where the Moab Music Festival hosts the Colorado River Benefit Concerts. In this spectacular red-rock amphitheater, you will experience your first private concert. Later, at camp, the Tag-A-Long Expeditions staff will help set up your tents and deliver your river bags. Appetizers will precede dinner as the sun begins to fade and we enjoy the magnificent solitude of the canyons.

June 18 - Anasazi ruins

At first light, warming drinks will be delivered to your tent. After breakfast you will be back on the river, stopping here and there to explore beautiful side canyons, ancient Anasazi ruins and fascinating geological sites. When we arrive at our campsite for the evening, the Festival musicians will play stirring music surrounded by the quiet wilderness.

June 19 - Floating Concert

Our peaceful journey continues. One of today’s highlights will be the “floating concert,” a wonderful musical program played while we gently drift through the shifting, red-rock panorama. Today, you will have an opportunity to hike the “Loop Trail,” where you can see ancestral Puebloan rock art. If hiking isn’t for you, you can stay with the boats and enjoy a relaxing float around the meander. Tonight we will be treated to another fantastic concert at our cozy camp tucked up in the canyon.

June 20 - Confluence, Canyonlands National Park

This is the final leg of our flat water voyage. Today, we will complete our trip at “the Confluence,” the point where the Colorado and Green Rivers meet. This is, indeed, the heart of Canyonlands National Park. It is here where our flat-water-only participants will say goodbye and return to Moab via high-speed jet boat, just in time for dinner.

Meanwhile, those who are ready for some adventure will enter the premier white water of the Colorado River. We will run part of the rapids, scouting ahead when necessary to make sure of the best routes. Most guests start the rapids with cautious anticipation and quickly succumb to the excitement of them. Cooled by splashes, we will arrive at camp where dry clothes and refreshments are welcome. Our last evening, we will enjoy our final dinner together beside the river.

June 21 - Cataract Canyon Rapids

We will rise early, ready to run the major rapids of Cataract Canyon. This section is noted for the “Big Drops,” “Mile Long” and “Brown Betty.” Exhilarated, we will make shore at Hite Marina, where planes will be waiting to shuttle us back to Moab. The scenic flight will take us above the river and rapids we just experienced and we will see the National Park’s intricate maze of canyons as few people do. It is a fitting way to end such a wonderful trip.
